Roadworthy Certificates in Brisbane

A roadworthy certificate, or Queensland safety certificate, is legally required when you sell, transfer, or re-register a vehicle. It shows your vehicle meets the minimum safety standards set by Queensland regulations at the time of inspection.

At Stouch Mechanics, we perform roadworthy inspections and issue certificates once your vehicle satisfies the required standards. Our process is simple and focused on compliance.

What Is a Roadworthy Certificate?

A roadworthy certificate shows your vehicle has passed a safety inspection based on Queensland requirements. The inspection checks key safety items to see if your vehicle qualifies for certification.

A roadworthy inspection does not guarantee future performance and does not assess the vehicle’s overall condition beyond the required safety checks.

When a Roadworthy Certificate Is Required

In Queensland, you usually need a roadworthy certificate when:

• selling a registered vehicle
• transferring vehicle ownership
• Re-registering an unregistered vehicle

The certificate must be current and valid when you use it for these purposes.

What Is Checked During a Roadworthy Inspection

A roadworthy inspection looks at safety-related parts of your vehicle, which may include:

• brakes
• steering and suspension
• tyres and wheels
• lights and indicators
• windscreen and wipers
• seatbelts
• body condition affecting safety

Only parts related to safety compliance are checked during the inspection.

Pass and Fail Outcomes Explained

If your vehicle meets the required safety standards, you’ll receive a roadworthy certificate.

If your vehicle does not meet the requirements, it will fail the inspection. In that case:

• The reasons for the failure are explained clearly
• Repairs are required before a certificate can be issued
• A re-inspection is needed once issues are addressed

A failed inspection does not include any repairs or servicing.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a roadworthy certificate the same as a pre-purchase inspection?
No. A roadworthy inspection is a legal safety check and does not assess the overall condition or suitability of the vehicle for purchase.
Does a roadworthy inspection include repairs?
No. Repairs are not included. Any needed work must be done separately before you can get a certificate.
How long is a roadworthy certificate valid for?
For private sellers, it's two months or two thousand kilometres - whichever comes first and three months or one thousand kilometres for a licensed motor dealer. Valid for one new registration or transfer.
What happens if my vehicle fails the inspection?
If your vehicle fails, we’ll explain why, let you know what repairs are needed, and arrange a re-inspection.
Does a roadworthy certificate guarantee the vehicle is problem-free?
No. It only confirms your vehicle met minimum safety standards at the time of inspection.
