We have had a run lately of the worst kind of breakdown callouts where we had to relate the sad news that the engine had to be replaced. We would like to impress upon vehicle owners the importance of regular servicing, particularly major ones.
While you might consider that a service is about checking and changing oil and other fluids, we have had two instances lately where a "timing belt" inside the engine had failed. We will spare you the technical detail, but suffice, there is a symphony of fast-moving hard metal parts inside your engine and the timing belt is the conductor that ensures that everything is operating in harmony.
The failure of a timing belt will normally mean disaster as with the conductor absent from the orchestra. The hard metal things are going to collide and tear each other apart. Imagine the string department of an orchestra going to town on the horn section and well..... you get the picture.
While stretching a service or even worse skipping a service might make short term financial sense, missing a service might have the worst possible outcome. "Timing belts" and "timing chains" are normally replaced at major service intervals at 100,000 - 150,000 km or 3-5 years into a car's lifespan.
Should you have concerns or questions about the service interval, service history of your car or there is a strange new noise coming from the engine, it's time to call and discuss it with Stouch Auto and Mechanical.
