Basic car maintenance: How to check the coolant level

17 July 2019

Overheating Engines is something you don't want to happen if you're on your way to an important meeting or on a road trip. As you drive, your car generates heat that might cause more problems if left neglected. To prevent this and keep your car functioning in its prime condition, heat regulation is necessary. This is why the coolant exists. Some people recognise it as a green (or red) liquid that keeps your engine from freezing during winter. But did you know it keeps things cool during the summer, too? First of all, what is engine coolant and what is it used for?

Coolant is a fluid that absorbs the heat produced by your car's engine. Without it, your car won't be able to dissipate heat through the radiator. One of its most important functions is the fact that it helps regulate your car's engine temperature to keep it from overheating. Checking the coolant level of your car is quite a simple task and servicing it includes draining the system and replacing it with new coolant. Checking your car's coolant reservoir is an important part of your regular car maintenance. Here are a few steps that you can do on your own in terms of determining the coolant level of your car.

1. Cool the engine
Make sure the engine is cool upon opening the hood to check the temperature of the radiator of your vehicle. Inspecting the engine while it's still hot releases and produces pressure which could cause a serious burn. Wait until it's cooled down, open and turn the radiator cap counterclockwise.

2.  Check coolant levels
Look into the radiator hole and check if there's adequate coolant. If the liquid is below the cap and covers the radiator tube, it indicates that your vehicle contains enough coolant. If you don't see the liquid inside, then it's time to add the coolant accordingly. You can also have a mixture of water and coolant. Return the cap after adding coolant. Checking it on a regular basis is a big help to save you the hassle caused by engine overheating.
